Disclosure: Air Hogs provided me with a DR1 Micro Race Drone To Facilitate this Post. All opinions are my own.
Let’s be honest here, we all have that present we get our kids because we really like it ourselves. Then we cross our fingers and hope our kids will too. My son is autistic and sometimes getting him presents can be a tad bit of a chore. He has his things he loves. They are books. And yes we do make sure he gets some.
I love books as much as he does, but one thing that I always believed, even as a kid. You can’t make everything all about books. I believe that there has to be some amount of toys that are included or it’s just not Christmas.
We have always done pretty good. By the time we are done, when he opens up the presents, everything gets some attention by him. What does not get played with right away, will often come out in a couple months. He will start playing with the toy then, or even as much as a year later. I don’t remember a single time, when he has completely walked away from a present and never played with it.
We have watched him over the past few months looking for clues to what might get his attention, and often drawn a blank. We usually try to involve some level of remote control. Last year it ended up being a great option as he played with that off and on for months. He got quite a kick out of it for a while.
Drone As A Christmas Option
The option of a drone has been something that I have thought about for months so, when the opportunity came up, I decided that it would be a good year to figure out how he liked those. This is an ideal toy as once again I try to stretch his interests. And I know that in the long run, he will like this, because inside he is still a boy and he does like to play. Just not always at the same pace and time as other kids.
It’s also another great toy that will allow us to bond with him as in early days, he will need us to show him and help him. And again, those are moments that ever parent cherishes, helping their kids master something new.
Rated for ages 10+, the DR1 Micro Race Drone from Spinmaster and Airhog has a 40 minute charge time, 7 minute flight time and a 250 meter radius, which is plenty since it is an indoor drone. This tiny toy actually measures 3″ by 3″ by 1″ and can pretty much fit in the palm of your hand. Definitely a nice mid range toy and small enough to use as a starter for kids just getting into drones.
