Almost all of us grew up reading Dr. Seuss and most of our kids have too. The Atlantic Ballet Theatre of Canada’s Centre for Arts and Education has brought Seussical: The Musical, created by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, to the Wesleyan Celebration Centre in Moncton on June 3rd and 4th.
Starring a cast of 100 students, actors and musicians, directed by Igor Dobrovolskiy and based off the books of Dr. Seuss, this show brings to life all the great characters that were spread across so many of these classic books.
Ever since my kids first heard that the Seussical show was going to be shown here in Moncton, they have expressed an interest in seeing it. When I mentioned to them that we were going to get the chance to go they were thrilled.
The story of Seussical is about Horton the Elephant who vows to protect the microscopic town Whoville, while simultaneously guarding his friend bird Gertrude’s egg. In the process, he is captured by hunters, auctioned to the circus and even put on trial. Through it all, Horton must summon all of his faith, courage and loyalty to stand up for what he believes in, stand by his friends, and protect those who need his help, against all odds.
The Centre For Arts and Education provides not only afterschool programs, but also Musical Theatre, Ballet, Contemporary Dance and even Adult Theatre classes. Seussical is put on partly as the spring production from the Musical Theatre class but also brings together other talent as well to provide a great entertaining event.
