Helpful Advice for Taking Children on Their First Cruise
A cruise can be an exciting adventure for children, the closest they’ll probably get to acting like pirates in real life. Setting sail on a huge boat for one or more weeks to explore various parts of the world by seas is also something many adults enjoy, so going on a family cruise could be a good choice for your next vacation.
However, going on a cruise differs in many ways to most other holidays. For this reason you will need to prepare well, especially when taking young children on their first ever cruise. Here is some useful advice for ensuring a fun and safe cruise.
Choose a Family Friendly Cruise
There are hundreds of cruises that travel to every corner of the globe, such as the unique trips offered by Planet Cruise. Not every one of these is appropriate for children (obviously you wouldn’t take them on an 18-30s voyage). It is important you do plenty of research to check out the facilities on board, such as whether there’s a kids’ club, baby-sitting service and more. Certain cruises exist based around children’s interests too, like Disney cruises.
Book a Safe Cabin
Being on a large boat in the middle of the ocean provides many unique risks to adults and children. As well as keeping your kids in sight as much as possible, further safeguard against any potential accidents by booking an inside cabin. Having a balcony may seem like a nice idea, but when you’ve got small children running around you’ll always fear the worst.
Pack Properly
Firstly, remember to pack travel sickness medication. Hopefully you and your children will experience a smooth journey but you don’t want to spend half the time looking after them being sick. Have carry on luggage full of sun cream, snacks or baby food, drinks, a couple of toys and swimwear. It could be a few hours before you can access your other luggage when embarking on a big cruise.
Base Your Itinerary Around Your Children
Depending on their ages, get your children involved with planning the trip. They may point out bits you’d otherwise miss and give a good idea of where they’d like to go. Some cruises provide early and late meal times, so you can organise days and activities that slot in well with children’s normal routines. This should help them get adapted to life at seas better much quicker. Hopefully these tips should ensure you all have a fun time cruising the world.

I have never been on a cruise. That sounds like so much fun though! These look like great tips. I don’t think I would have thought of booking an inside cabin because having a balcony does sound like it would be great. I can only imagine how much I would worry about my kids with a balcony though.

Some good advice here, though I personally have never fancied a cruise. Perhaps because at least four of my seven children would get seasick on a short ferry ride. 🙁
I have never been on a cruise, it’s something we’ve talked about on and off but finally decided we would love to do it.. I’ll have to keep all these tips in mind when it comes time to plan, we both would like to go within the next year or so.
