Disclosure: I received a copy of Chicken Soup For The Soul: The Joy Of Less for the purposes of completing this review. All opinions are my own.
I have moved many times over the years. Starting long before I ever got married I moved around a lot. Every one of those moves was accompanied by boxing up all my stuff and moving it all to the new house. I barely ever threw out anything and my collection of “stuff” kept growing.
A little while ago we made a couple of relatively final moves. In the first move we had a lot of stuff stored in our basement. In actual fact, a solid half of our basement was filled with boxes and junk spread all around. When we decided to move, the first decision my wife made was that it was time to declutter. While there was a lot of things down there that I was attached too, I quickly realize that it was not actually that much.
When we left the basement we went through every room in the house, figuring out what was important and what was junk. We cleaned out everything, from books I had read dozens of times, to clothes that were two sizes to small.
What was so amazing was that when we moved into our new house, we had so much extra room and even converted our basement into a playroom for the kids, something we had never had before.
When it came time to make our latest move, we decided that we would make sure that we did it right again and made sure that we decluttered each room as we went again. And it feels good, The extra space is great, the kids playroom is even better and we felt great with the results.
When I got the chance to review Chicken Soup For The Soul: The Joy Of Less, I was thrilled. I was interested to learn of differing points on the idea of decluttering. The surprising thing is some of the extra bits I picked up that could also be so valuable. The idea of things like unplugging, sharing stuff between friends and neighbors, starting over from scratch, etc.
The whole idea of doing less, of being less to those who should have no demands on our time and of basically cutting down to just the important things in life. That ideal is a great one and it is something that everyone should look at.
While I would not by any means consider ourselves minimalists, I do believe we have done a great job in starting to move towards a life that is far less cluttered and much more enjoyable.
