Report card time is an up and down time for all children and parents, however it is especially trying for parent’s of autistic children. The reason is that most parent’s are never sure if their teacher will properly take into account their child’s situation appropriately (especially if a SEP is in place) and I have noticed in our case that sometimes it is not.
Today was our children’s report cards and with it came the traditional dreaded lets take a look. But surprise, surprise this time the report card was fairly accurately weighted. In the marked section the only real surprise to me was just how well he has done in math and how excited the teacher seemed over it. His reading had our expected results, he reads fluently but unable to determine his comprehension level. His major downfalls are his behaviours and his unwillingness to engage in fine motor skill activities.
Past reports we have gotten have been focused almost exclusively on the negative (or in one case was a complete copy/paste on all students reports including a name being included) so it was interesting to get a good clear report of his standings, taking into consideration his autism and his behaviours but still accurately reflecting on his progress instead of constant belittling his behaviour issues.
I remarked at the beginning of the year that I felt that the teacher chosen for him for this year was a remarkable improvement over last year (after initial questions) and very little I have seen this year makes me question that.
So now on to the final portion of the year and towards the end of grade one into grade two. We can only hope that the remainder of the year continues to show the progress that has been shown in this latest report.
