Disclosure: I received a Moto Z play and Hasselblad Camera Mod to facilitate this review. All Opinions are my own.
I have been extremely fortunate over the past two years to have worked with Motorola a few times and I have gotten to prefer them a lot. The latest phone I have been using with them is a Moto Z play. This phone also has a newer family member in the Moto Z2 Play.
Comparing the Moto Z Play and Moto Z2 Play.
Now there are some great features with both phones, both are 5.5″ phones and both come with great cameras attached. One of my favorite features of the the Moto Z Play is the fact that it has a 16MP camera built in. This is a very high quality level of camera and in fact it exceeds almost any phone on the market. In reality it actually exceeds the MP level of many of the lower and mid range costing cameras.
I love this quality of camera as it allows me the opportunity to blow up some of my best photos and still have a great quality image.
Long Battery Life And Great Camera
The other feature I love with my phone is the fact that the battery lasts 50 hours. This is a relative figure as if you spend the entire time on your phone streaming heavy graphic video, it probably wont last that long. However for standard use, the phone will usually last a couple of days.
For comparison, the Moto Z2 Play which is a newer generation phone, dropped to a 12MP camera with a 30 hour battery, both are still relatively top end for this type of application. Very few phone manufacturers still go as high as 12MP. The 30 hour battery still lasts more then a day with relatively normal usage. However there is one area where the Moto Z2 Play actually excels and that is in the memory department. It has a 3GB RAM in comparison to 2GB for the Moto Z Play. It also has 32GB internal memory standard in comparison to the Z Play’s 16. Both phones have the capability of adding a MicroSD card with up to the mind blowing 2TB of space. That 2TB actually exceeds the Hard Drive on MOST computers and laptops available on the market today
So now we realize that the Moto Z family of phones is relatively mind blowing and in all honesty appears to be in the top of it’s class.
So how does Motorola manage to top this?
Well it seems that Motorola decided that it would be fun to add a real speaker to their phone. Maybe someone wants to project images and would prefer to use their phone rather then a computer or projector. Maybe they want to upgrade their Camera even more then it already is. It could even be as simple as the much more standard concept of extending their battery life. Motorola decided to take that process a whole lot farther and create a phone that could allow each of these add on’s to be created and simply put onto the back of the phone much like a back cover plate.
I was given the opportunity to try out their Hasselblad Camera modification.
While it does drop my current 16 MP down to 12 MP it adds the functionality of a 10X zoom. The 10X Zoom allows me to bring objects a whole lot closer then my current set up. As an added bonus for those who like to play with their photos, they have included the option to shoot in RAW. This is one of the formats regularly used by professional photographers to allow them the most room to make the edits they need without sacrificing any image quality.
Below are just a few of the Photos I took on a recent trip to Niagara Falls using the Moto Z Play and the Hasselblad True Zoom Moto Mod

I like the battery life so I can take pictures all day long. Of course none of that matters if the camera is fabulous. So this looks like a perfect option for a day out with the family even if it runs long.

I’d love to say all the great camera features as that is usually what is most important to me… but as I run around with my current phone plugged into a battery pack most of the time because it won’t hold a charge I will say that the battery is my favourite!
