I received an Ecobee Smart Thermostat to facilitate this post. All opinions are my own.
When you live in the Maritimes you get used to fluctuating temperatures. Unfortunately, this often means that several times during the day you will have to go change all the thermostats. The nice fall day you started with, decided to become a blizzard by noon and a tropical spring day by supper (yes this has happened). Ecobee smart Thermostats helps address this problem by adjusting the temperature to best suit your usage and ideal temperatures. The sensor can tell if anyone is in the room and adjust the temperature to a predetermined value based on that, as well as the weather forecast etc. It is designed for an HVAC system because it gives a single central control to the entire house. Each room has the ability to have its own sensor that allows each room to have its own separate feel.
On the surface, this is a great system. Using the smart thermostat coupled with a room sensor for each room, you can control all temperature control functions in the home through your HVAC system. The room sensors also aid in telling which rooms are occupied so that the temperature in each room can be adjusted accordingly to aid in saving power.
Ecobee Is So Much More Than Just A Thermostat
However, while I was researching this product deeper I realized there was a huge added bonus. One that made it likely that I would build an Ecobee system into the house when I next move. The bonus was that Ecobee had created light switches that will soon be able to double as room sensors. These switches will soon sense the temperature in the room as well as the occupancy. This means that the temperature can be adjusted, in addition to also turning on and off the lights based on if there is anyone using the room.
This is great for anyone who is a tad forgetful when it comes to turning off the lights. Or those who have children that simply ignore the fact that the devices on the wall were put by the door to make it easy to shut lights off when you leave a room. This can save huge on power bills simply by shutting off the lights when not in use.
So now you have smart light switches turning on and off the lights for you, but soon they will also act as temperature gauges making sure each room is the appropriate temperature based on the occupancy.
Create A Whole Home Package
Let’s add some more fun. The Smart thermostat kit operates off of Alexa and can be spoken to, and even pipe in music on request. It can even access the weather network to predict upcoming weather systems that might require temperature being adjusted in advance. The light switches even have little nightlights underneath them that can be used as required. A major bonus is that the system can even randomize the lights when you are away on vacation. This helps to make it seem like you are still home. It can even set your outdoor lights on a timer so you never forget to turn on your porch light.
For the up and coming tech-savvy family this system is extremely adept at meeting your needs.
