On a recent road trip to Toronto for a vacation, my family had the opportunity to do a bit of a side trip to Niagara Falls. Many years ago around Christmas time I was driven past the falls late one evening. I had been going to visit a family friend for the Christmas holidays and really the sights were beautiful, with the ice coating everything and the lights creating an amazing effect. It was something I remembered for years.
Now many years later (nearly 25 I think) I was taking my family to some of the same areas I spent time in, when I lived in Toronto. In all honesty I had planned on going to see the Falls itself, however we got side tracked by an opportunity to visit a couple of great Niagara Falls attractions. Bird Kingdom was something I don’t think we will ever really forget.
It is just a little building on a bend in the road. Really it looked nice but not large. What I was not prepared for was how impressive they had made the inside. It started with a small section with some interesting history of the Falls and even some neat stuff about early trips over the Falls in a Barrel.
After the history there are some rooms that give you a chance to get a close look at some exotic birds, as well as some reptiles, turtles, some snakes etc.
After the reptiles you start to see some Birds. Here is where it gets really cool. There is a whole room that is open and you walk through it, with little small birds flitting around you like they have zero fear of you. From there you travel through a room of nocturnal animals including Owls and bats.
The most incredible part of the visit is the last. Spread over several floors, open except for walk ways, there is a huge aviary. Wide open and several stories high, the birds in this section were of the larger, colourful and impressive variety. Beautiful and breathtaking, these birds were tropical in nature and brilliant enough to make anyone smile.
My kids were thrilled to find out we were going to see the birds, but honestly I do not believe they were even close to prepared for the spectacle of that final room. I know I wasn’t.
This trip will be one of the highlights of my adult life for a very long time. The places we went, the things we did, it will be almost impossible to jam that much fun and excitement into one trip again.
Bird Kingdom, Niagara Falls
Bird Kingdom is definitely an attraction I would recommend to those who love birds and to those who love animals and it is open from 9:30 AM to 5 PM year round. Recommended minimum time for a visit is one hour and it is well worth the time.

Bird Kingdom looks like a great place to visit, I wish we had gone there when we were last in Niagara Falls visiting. We did check out the Butterfly conservatory though which was very cool. I grew up in Ontario, mainly Hamilton/Burlington area and NEVER went to visit Niagara Falls until years later when lived in BC and went back to visit family.
