One of the biggest challenges that I face as a parent of a non verbal, classically autistic son is making sure that he gets the proper education that will give him the best shot at having the ability to function semi autonomously as he reaches adulthood. So it is always good to see a school like the Bachman Academy that dedicates themselves to teaching those who nee the most help, reach the best potential they possibly can.
Bachman Academy
Bachman Academy is a school for students who have been diagnosed with learning differences. They educate both boarding and day students in 6th through 12th grade who are diagnosed with Autism, ADHD, Dyslexia, Aspergers Syndrome and other Non-verbal learning differences. The academy’s mission is to help students to develop the tools, skills and values necessary for success in a global society. At Bachman Academy their curriculum includes a researched based, multi-sensory approach that is designed specifically for the individual and provides middle and high school students the opportunity to learn in a nurturing and safe environment. Ninety per cent of their students are able to transition to two and four year colleges. In addition, they incorporate assistive technology along with a successful skills curriculum, which covers personal finance, social etiquette, completing job applications, interview skills, personal appearance, self-advocacy, and preparing for independent living.
Their career-education program is unique among the majority of boarding specialty schools. The programs are built on outcome-based learning. The career-education electives include, equine studies, mechanics, woodworking and horticulture/agriculture.
Being fully aware of their students learning needs, their teachers’ styles and their methods are geared to teach the way each student learns best. The Academy boasts a 5 to 1 student to faculty ratio, and a 1 to 1 student to staff ratio. The 188-acre campus is the ideal backdrop for an environmentally-friendly, focused school that helps students from average to above average who struggle to learn in a traditional learning environment.
