Most people consider their pets as family. And in many ways, pets are like small children and require plenty of attention and care—especially dogs and cats. They need to be potty-trained, regularly fed, constantly loved and potentially have their own bed. On top of this, these curious and playful companions occasionally run into trouble, leaving behind a trail of mess or destruction for you to clean. While most parents try to make their home childproof, pet-proofing a home is not nearly as common. To protect your furry companions and to make your space pet-friendly, here are eight tips to try.
1. Put yourself in your pet’s shoes
The best way to create a pet friendly space is to try to see things from their perspective. What are some of their favourite spots or hiding places? What do they like to sniff? Think about all of the potential hazards or items that you want them to avoid.
2. Hide away electrical cords and plugs
These items could strangle, electrocute or suffocate your pets. Make sure any dangling wires, extension cords, as well as window sash cords are tucked away or shortened to prevent harm.
3. Avoid feeding your pet certain foods
There’s a whole list of foods that are poisonous to pets, but are safe for humans. This includes apple seeds, onions, macadamia nuts, gum, alcohol, and more. Even food that is typically seen as natural for pets, such as chicken bones can be harmful and is a choking hazard. If you’re unsure what you can or cannot feed your pets, either avoid giving them the food in question or ask your vet or conduct some research online.
4. Put hazardous materials out of reach
You might find this surprising but even certain types of plants, such as daffodils, oleanders, and tulips are toxic for pets, specifically dogs. Similar to childproofing your home, chemicals and cleaning products also pose a threat to pets and should be sealed and stored safely to prevent chemical exposure.
5. Replace your carpet with wood
Carpets absorb odours and are difficult to clean. If you’re looking for a pet-friendly home, it’s ideal to go for a place that has hardwood flooring or consider getting a renovation if the place is carpet. Hardwood floors are much easier to clean when it comes to removing stains, fur, and odours.
6. Get a built-in feeding station
Save space as well as make your place look neat and tidy with built-in feeding stations. These stations come in a variety of styles and designs that are catered to your layout. You can find these at select pet stores, online, as well as build them yourselves. For starters, here are some inspiration from Pinterest.
7. Buy a scratching post for your cat
Cats scratch for many reasons, from removing dead outer layer of their claws to marking territory by leaving a visual mark. If you have a cat, it’s natural for them to scratch your furniture. To avoid further damage, give them a scratching post. These can be found in almost any pet stores and online.
8. Choose stain-resistant bedding and covers
While it’s nice to have your pet cuddle up with you in bed, or allow them to rest on your cushion, their dirty paws can leave a lot of stains on your bed and cushions. Choose stain-resistant fabrics for your bedding, sofas, sectionals and decorative pillows, and blankets. That way, it’s easier wash your sheets and keep your sleeping and resting space nice and clean.
Pets are bundles of love, wrapped in fur. By following these tips, you’ll create a safer and more welcoming environment for you and your furry bundle of joy.

Good ideas for pet owners, though I must admit that I’d not want my pets on my couch nor my bed. I have a friend who had 3 dogs at the time I visited her. Despite having covers on her furniture I was literally wearing a fur coat when I left!
