We think of colouring as just a simple activity, but it is much more than just what it seems. Kids tend to love it and it can help to keep them away from tablets and computers at a very early age which will be much appreciated by many parents. In addition, there are so many psychological and creative benefits for the cognitive development of a child’s brain that we don’t fully understand at this time.
One of the biggest benefits is that colouring can help to improve fine motor skills in young children. It aids in the development of the muscles in the fingers, hands and wrist. Colouring also helps to improve their fine motor grip because of the skill development required to do the drawing and colouring. It also helps them to learn to be creative at an early age and is something that they will develop more as they do more activities that require it. It can also help inspire kids to brainstorm and learn to think outside the box. This is something that technology has difficulty accomplishing at this time.
Colouring also helps to prepare them to start school. Almost everything in the educational system is done on paper, from homework to lessons, tests and other written classwork. It is a good idea to just give your children an advantage before starting school. Colouring sheets, books and pages can be integral in preparing kids for the more structured work ahead of them. Even the Canadian Government has web pages where they offer free colouring sheets for children because they are aware of the benefits it provides to a young brain in development.
Colouring is good for colour awareness, recognition and discernment.
Colouring will also help children learn the names of the colours that even before they would learn it at school. It also fosters awareness of primary and common colours as well as more nuanced ones that are more subtle. The act of holding pencils, choosing colours, putting the colour in the ideal spot and even sharpening crayons can all help with cultivating strong hand-eye coordination in youngsters.
Colouring also helps children to learn about lines, shapes, perspective, patterns and forms.
Most kids love to colour, and it turns out it’s more than just a recreational activity. It can also foster physical and psychological development in a range of areas. Get your kids colouring as early as possible. And you’ll contribute to a lifetime of positive benefits.

Coloring is still the favorite activity of my grandkids. It was the favorite of my children also. We always make a big thing out of their artwork. Their artwork even showed their true feelings. We still have some of their first drawings. I enjoy drawing & coloring with the kids. It’s good therapy for me too.

I love colouring with my kids. It’s such a good way to spend time together and to get them to talk about their day. When they are focussed on doing something, they tend to share more.
